Michael C. Powell graduated from University College Cork with a BCL Degree in 1970. He then studied with the Law Society in Dublin and qualified as a Solicitor in 1973. Michael is responsible for the Private Client Department and the Family Law Department within the firm. He has practiced throughout his career in all areas of general practice and gained a wealth of knowledge and experience. He is a member of the Southern Law Association. He is also a member of the Law Society of Ireland and has served on the Southern Law Association Conveyancing Committee and Southern Law Association Solicitor’s helpline for many years.

He has extensive experience in dealing with commercial property. A year after qualifying he began dealing with Building Estates on behalf of a Developer. Michael’s main focus in the firm is on property both residential and commercial. He also deals with Landlord and Tenant transactions, purchase and sale of ground rents, property arbitrations, boundary disputes, leases, rectification of boundary maps, rectification of title issues and tenancy matters.

He further oversees the Family Law Department. Therein he advises in relation to property transactions, lending and re-structuring of borrowings during the split up of assets between marital and non-martial couples.

Seán Durcan began his career with Michael Powell Solicitors in 1975 and has been a Partner of the firm for the last twenty years. He was a member of the Council of the Law Society of Ireland for a number of years where he sat mainly on the Compensation Fund Committee and was Chairman of one section of the Registrars Committee. He has been a member of the Southern Law Committee for twenty years where he was President and has been Treasurer for the last fifteen years. He was also instrumental in the setting up of the Cork Solicitors Helpline.

He has extensive litigation experience both for Plaintiffs and Defendants in all courts for personal injury, commercial and landlord and tenant matters. He has an extensive network of both Junior and Senior Council in Cork and in Dublin.

He has been the sole legal advisor for a period of twenty years to a public education body who have over twenty Post Primary Schools. He has in that capacity dealt with varying cases in all courts including Judicial Review cases, Employers Liability cases, the Equality Tribunal and the Labour Court. He also has an unrivalled success rate in defending public liability and personal injury cases for this client.

Sean is one of the most experienced Solicitors with regard to the District Court in Cork, dealing with weekly applications, licensing and debt collection matters. He was the Solicitor that won a ground breaking case in the Supreme Court on the 18th of June 1998 which decided the difference between a Lease and a Licence. He is presently acting on behalf of 84 plaintiffs in the High Court who claim they were wrongly advised by a Financial Institution.

Further to the above, Sean acts for one of the city’s leading Credit Unions in a range of legal matters but more particularly, their Debt Collection & Enforcement and any employment queries they might encounter. Sean also runs our Agency Department within the office with the last 20 years. This is where Solicitors nationwide contact Sean to deal with matters where they themselves are not in a position to attend. These agency matters include applications in all Courts and Tribunals in Cork.

Jenny Powell, TEP, Associate Solicitor, is the head of our Wills and Probate Department. She is a registered Trust and Estate Practitioner and is a member of STEP the Worldwide Professional Association for Practitioners dealing with inheritance and Succession Planning.

She is also a member of Solicitors for the Elderly and advises on Enduring Powers of Attorney, Capacity Issues and other issues affecting the older client.

Katherina White, Associate Solicitor, has extensive experience in general practice and advises clients in all areas of law. She has a Law Society Diploma in Family Law and a Law Society Certificate in Commercial Contracts.

She is a member of the Cork Family Lawyers Association and the Southern Law Association.

She is a panel Solicitor for the Residential Tenancies Board and various financial Institutions.

She has a Postgraduate LLB from UCC and is admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in England and Wales.

<h1><strong>Colm Ó Riain</strong></h1>

Colm Ó Riain graduated from University College Cork with a BCL degree. He served his apprenticeship here with Michael Powell Solicitors, before qualifying as a solicitor in 1980. Upon qualifying Colm joined a leading firm of Solicitors in Ennis, Co. Clare where he gained further experience before returning to Cork in 1985, setting up his own practice, Colm S. Ó Riain & Co. in Washington Street.

Colm has now joined Michael Powell Solicitors as a Consultant bringing with him his considerable experience gained over 40 years.

Colm is a highly skilled Conveyancer dealing in property transactions, both residential and commercial. He has a wealth of experience in Wills and Probate as well as Personal Injury Litigation where he has attained significant settlements/awards in a number of high profile cases.

Travelling in the city centre direction on Andersons Quay, go through 1st set of lights (Penrose Wharf on right) at Michael Collins Bridge. Transfer into left lane and at the next set of traffic lights, bear left. Cross the Brian Boru Bridge (wrought iron structure) and go through two more set of lights and it is situated opposite the Clayton Hotel.

We are strategically located in the central business district in the heart of Cork city & opposite the inspired architecture of City Hall. There is on street disc parking or the Clarion Hotel car park.
